In the age of modern technology, government agencies and large enterprises regularly make use of technology for security arrangements, particularly where granting access to restricted data and secured areas are concerned. The federal government uses several technological software and tools, such as:
Smart Card Technology
Used by almost all major organizations, the smart card technology helps governments and big organizations to restrict access to sensitive information and provides access only to limited people. The smart cards are the size of pocket cards and they have built-in integrated circuits. These circuits have the capacity to process large amounts of sensitive data.
Government agencies use smart card technology to process input with ICC applications and then give the desired information as output. Almost all the smart cards are made of PVC plastic and they have individual holograms to prevent counterfeit cards. The smart card technology makes use of both volatile and non-volatile memory components and basic security logic. An example of a smart card in everyday use are credit cards and debit cards.
USB Tokens
Also known as security tokens, authentication tokens, hardware tokens, hard tokens, key fobs and cryptographic tokens, the USB tokens ensure that only authenticated users have access to secured data. The tokens are in the form of physical devices, which is connected with a central authorized computer service. Upon swiping the security token, the computer service recognizes the token code, verifies the user identity and then allows the user to pass. These days, even banks have implemented this technology because bank authorities find that the use of security tokens is better than password protection or answering security questions.
Conclusion
The increase in government and corporate frauds, and the need to protect consumer information by public organizations like banks and health institutions has spurned the need for using modern technology in security measures.
