In a perfect world, your children are visiting the Disney Store and listening to classical music during their daily trips to the Internet. In the real world, kids are visiting sites they shouldn’t be yet many parents don’t know how to keep track of where they’re going. Here are some tips and tricks for keeping track of your internet history.
Talk to your kids about the Internet. There is still no better substitute than talking to your kids about their internet browsing history. If the moral high ground of not visiting undesirable websites doesn’t work, the knowledge that you are following what they are watching might have some impact. Your kids not only have access to the home computer but they have access to computers at school and at their friends’ houses, so good browsing protocol should be expected at all times.
If you have more than one browser on your computer, check the history of all browsers. You may use Firefox but the kids might use or even install Internet Explorer without you knowing. It’s pretty easy for a child to delete browsing history, so here are a few tips for Firefox and Internet Explorer.
Firefox is really easy. Simply go to the browser and click Ctrl H. You will be given parameters for which time band you want to search and view.
Internet Explorer is a tad more complicated but not difficult.
- Click on “My Computer”
- Go to your computer’s “C drive”
- Click on “Documents and Settings”
- Click on your username
- Click on “Local Settings”
- Click on “Temporary Internet Files”
It’s a good idea to get your kid’s browsing history under control before they leave for college. Many job sites monitor down-time computer use, and even the slightest misstep can leave someone unemployed in a matter of moments.
